Fort Morgan, CO to Wray, CO

Although today was a little tough, it was all mentally, not so much physically.

The day started off like usual, with a 6 AM wake up. For breakfast today, we were greeted by a few of the Elk Lodge members, who cooked us an egg & sausage casserole, along with some fruit and juice. The food was delicious, but I made sure to eat only a little. Trust me, its not too fun riding on a full stomach.

We headed off on the bike for Wray. The weather was pretty nice throughout the day. It was never too cold to begin with, and was always cool with a nice breeze, even when the sun was pouncing on our backs. I was with some of the usual guys I ride with, Jason and Brad. However, today, my legs felt pretty tight. We had to rack for about 13 miles from mile marker 10 to 23. Racking up for that little while really killed any momentum I had going for me. After being put on the bikes, I felt a little sleepy and tired. Nothing too bad, but I definitely wasn’t one hundred percent. I fought through it, and I made it too lunch, and finally to lodging, but I could tell I struggled a little bit. I blame a little bit on my evening upper body workouts. Regardless, I figure most of the pain is in my head…it’s all mental. I know I could have crushed a day like today. The terrain wasn’t bad at all. In fact, I would even go as far as saying, it could have been fun.

Once we arrived to Wray, we rode straight into lodging, a YMCA-esque facility that has been sponsoring the Journey of Hope for 18 years. Right away they provided us Gatorade and fruit…a great sign for a good day.

After taking a nice hot shower, a few of us headed out to the market. I didn’t really need anything, but at the grocery store, they were offering steak samples. Since there isn’t exactly a ton of residents in this town, they basically gave me an entire steak…yeah, it was delicious. We headed back to lodging, where I took a well deserved nap for an hour.

After waking up, it was time for dinner. Like I said earlier, the facility that we were being sponsored by, has sponsored us for 18 years. For dinner, they invited the entire town for a potluck. Now, I have said this way too many times, but this dinner was definitely one of the best on the trip. Lasagna, spaghetti, pasta, nachos, pizza, home made break, and don’t get me started on the desserts. I must have easily gained 5 pounds at dinner alone.

After dinner, we were given a free 2 hour swim at the Wray swimming pool. Man, it was great especially as a muscle relaxer. After chilling around the pool with the rest of the guys, we headed back. Since we were at a gym, we took full advantage of the gym’s facilities. A few of us did a quick upper body workout. In retrospect, it was probably a bad idea, considering we have a 90 mile bike ride to Nebraska tomorrow, but I guess time will tell.

After finishing up with abs, I went straight to bed, tired and exhausted. It’s kind of crazy to think that a few of us aren’t satisfied by a 90 mile bike ride, which we have to work out again later in the night. Regardless, I’m tired. Until tomorrow…
