Today felt nice to be back on the bike. After the two stretch of a break, I was ready to ride. We were suppose to ride 80 miles day, but ended of riding 90 miles because of a little detour.
We woke up at 6. I was pretty surprised to see us wake up, because it was suppose to rain, and more than likely, thunderstorms, ending any chances of us riding.
However, the weather wasn’t too bad, a little misty, but was nice, considering how hot it usually is.
We had the usual breakfast with the addition of a chocolate donut. It brought me memories of early morning hockey games, where I would have a donut, AKA sinker, and just feel horrible during the game. Hopefully, it doesn’t have the same affects today. We headed out and it just felt right. I really missed riding, and it was just nice to get a workout. I was really impressed with Iowa. The countryside was absolutely gorgeous. Maybe its the corn, but it got to me. I never have seen such fields as green and true as these.
There were some interesting times of the ride. We past a couple of slaughterhouses. Man, I have never smelt anything so bad as that. I could barely breathe, and the the elevation wasn’t at all. We also past a couple of farms with scarecrows. I never saw an actual scarecrow, and I guess I was a little shocked, because you would think modern technology would catch up with farmland, and that there would be something a little more sophisticated than scarecrows. I guess not.
After a 10 mile detour, we landed in Cedar Rapids, at roughly 3, 90 miles deep. I didn’t eat anything during the ride, and I wasn’t even hungry for the late lunch. Shows how much energy there is in one donut. We made it to lodging, which was at the Arc of south central Iowa. Basically, the Arc is a National organization with branches all over the nation, that serve the families of people with disabilities. We set up of sleeping area in their conference room, and went across the street to the YMCA where we took showers. We relaxed for a couple of hours, and then headed to dinner, which was at a potluck at the park. We met a couple interesting people, and the food was really great. I was really impressed with the city of Cedar Rapids, as it was quite large. I learned today, that Iowa is a state with many little cities, which differs from Nebraska, as Nebraska is a state with many little towns.
We headed back from dinner, and a few of us went to the YMCA to work out for a bit. We only have a 30 mile ride tomorrow, so we figure we could squeeze a good workout in.
We then took the rest of the night off, relaxing and hanging, and just goofing off. Kind of the norm.
It wasn’t long until I fell asleep pretty exhausted.
