McCook, NE to Minden, NE

Today we started with our first wake up in the central time zone. It was a pretty normal morning and we got to sleep in until 6 to adjust to the change.

We had the usual breakfast and we headed off on the road. One of the crew members, Marty, decided to ride along with us today, with his father. At first he was doing fine, but had a little flair of arrogance. By the time lunch rolled around, he was definitely on the quiet side.

The roads weren’t too bad. There was a few rolling hills, but nothing out of the ordinary. My paceline, consisting of Jorge, Brad, and Jon, was going at 18 mph, a pretty decent speed, considering that Jorge wasn’t the best rider. Additionally, Brad’s biking cleats were broken, so he was using tennis shoes…not fun. I was feeling great. My legs were doing just fine, and even though it was a tougher terrain than the past 2 days, I was rolling though effortlessly. Nevertheless, it was the fourth day that we did 90+ miles. That’s over 360 miles in a 96 hour time frame…pretty impressive.

Now, Nebraska isn’t exactly the most exciting part of the country. Corn, followed by farms, followed by Corn. With that being said, we needed ways to entertain ourselves. I’ve been working on my video filming abilities on a bike…I’m not as good as I want to be, but I have over 1500 miles to practice.

On our way to Minden, we past a few small towns called Funk and Atlanta. I found Atlanta pretty interesting, as it was a POW camp for German soldiers during World War II. I never heard of such a thing, so it was pretty interesting to see such a ghost town. After talking to Trent, who lives in Omaha, he was telling me that had Hitler got his way, he wanted to make Omaha the capital of the “North America region” of Germany, based on its central location. Now you know.

We arrived in Minden by 2. We were staying at a middle school today. Since this was a small town, we basically had the day off. Once we got to lodging, I just relaxed and ended up taking a nap. By the time I woke up, it was already dinner time. For dinner, we were sponsored by a local pizza hut. They basically gave us each half a pizza, some cinnamon buns and breadsticks. Needless to say, I just went to town. 360 miles in 96 hours, we deserved it.

After dinner, a few of us did a quick workout. Since the flat plains aren’t too bad, a lot more people are getting into working out with me, and we’ve been doing 8 minute abs, Man do they burn. We went to the local grocery store, I picked up literally a quarter watermelon for a dollar and absolutely destroyed it.

After the delicious snack, a bunch of the group decided to do a relay race. I was just about to wiped out to it, but they looked like they had a lot of fun with it. It was a nice day to relax. I’m pretty excited about tomorrow, apparently it’s a big arrival. Until then…
